Skald: Odyssey — Privacy Policy
Who we are
Skald: Odyssey is a reader for Homer's Odyssey, with source-grounded retellings, historical editions, Greek text, maps, and art. The app is published by MannaMila LLC ("MannaMila", "we", "us", or "our").
For privacy or data requests, contact privacy@mannamila.com. For product support, contact support@mannamila.com.
The short version
- No accounts or sign-in. You do not give us your name, email address, or other contact information to use Skald: Odyssey.
- Skald: Odyssey stores your saved place and reading preferences locally. We have no server that syncs the app's local state. Platform-level encrypted backup or device-transfer features may preserve that local state as described below. Separately, the product events described below report the work, chapter, tier, and coarse progress milestones.
- We use required product analytics (Amplitude) and crash diagnostics (Sentry). These are active in the published app and disclosed here and in the app's About & Privacy screen. On Android, collection begins when the app starts; on iPhone and iPad, collection begins after you acknowledge the first-run data notice. Collection includes pseudonymous app-interaction events, a random install identifier, and technical crash/diagnostic data. It does not include your name, contacts, precise GPS location, or story passages as free text.
- We do not show ads, sell your data, or track you across other apps or the web.
- Analytics and diagnostics are part of the published app and do not have an in-app opt-out. See Your choices.
The launch and availability list is separate
This policy covers the Skald app on Android, iPhone, and iPad. If you choose to join the website's optional launch and platform-availability list, that response is separate from the app and is covered by the Waitlist Privacy Notice. Joining the list does not create a Skald account or connect an email address to app reading activity.
What we collect
Local resume state and settings
Skald: Odyssey stores your exact saved place in a story and current reading settings (such as the selected story length/tier, translation, and reading options) in the app's private on-device storage. The app has no account, server, or app-operated cloud sync for this state. Android explicitly disables cloud backup and device transfer for it. On iPhone and iPad, Apple's encrypted device or iCloud backup and device-transfer features may preserve app-container data according to your Apple settings. Separately, the telemetry below can report some reading choices and coarse progress milestones, but not the exact local resume position or the local state file. Clearing Android app data or uninstalling the app removes the active local copy; restoring a platform backup may restore a backed-up copy.
Required product-analytics events (Amplitude)
To understand which features are useful and where the experience can improve, the app sends product-analytics events to Amplitude, a third-party analytics processor. These events describe actions and app state, for example: opening the app or the library, selecting a book or chapter, starting or completing a story, switching story length (tier) or translation, and opening in-story helpers (such as glossary or image popovers).
The events are designed to be non-identifying. They contain things like the work/episode being read, the selected tier, coarse progress buckets (e.g. "20–29%"), and a pseudonymous install marker — not your name and not the passages you read as free text.
Along with these events, Amplitude receives a random install-level identifier used to link events from the same installation and understand usage over time (for example, whether a feature is used more than once on that installation). We use this only for product analytics. The identifier is generated by Skald: Odyssey, is neither an Android advertising ID nor Apple's Identifier for Advertisers (IDFA), and normally changes when the app is uninstalled and installed again. Restoring app data from a platform backup may restore the prior identifier.
Amplitude may also receive the network IP address used to deliver the request and may use it to infer an approximate region. Skald: Odyssey does not request Android location permission or use Apple's Core Location APIs, collect GPS coordinates, or send precise location.
Purpose: to measure feature usage and improve the app. We do not use this data for advertising, and we do not sell or rent it.
Required crash and diagnostic data (Sentry)
The published app uses Sentry for crash reports and technical diagnostic data, such as an error, stack trace, app version, and device/OS characteristics. This helps us find and fix failures. Skald: Odyssey clears user/request fields and does not intentionally attach story passages, contact information, or a user account. Each event carries the same pseudonymous Analytics ID used by Amplitude in a searchable skald_install_id tag solely so we can locate both processors' records when you request deletion. Sentry data is not used for advertising and is not sold.
On Apple's App Privacy label, the pseudonymous install identifier, product interaction, approximate region inferred by the processor, and crash/diagnostic records are declared as linked to the device or installation because the same random Analytics ID can associate those records. They are not linked to a name or app account, and they are not used for cross-app tracking.
What we do NOT collect
We do not collect any of the following:
- Names, email addresses, phone numbers, or other contact/identity information.
- Account credentials (there are no accounts).
- Precise location or GPS coordinates. Amplitude may infer an approximate region from the network request as described above.
- Contacts, calendar, SMS/messages, call logs, or your photos, audio, or files.
- Payment or financial information.
- Health or fitness data.
- Web-browsing history or activity in other apps.
- The specific text of stories you read (beyond the pseudonymous "which work/chapter/tier" event properties described above).
How your data is shared
We do not sell your data and we do not share it with third parties for their own purposes. The only parties that process data on our behalf are our service providers (processors):
- Amplitude — product analytics (see above).
- Sentry — crash and diagnostic reporting.
These providers process data solely to deliver their service to us, under their own terms and security practices. We do not permit them to use your data for their own advertising or resale.
Advertising and tracking
Skald: Odyssey contains no advertising, no ad networks, and no cross-app or cross-site tracking. We do not build advertising profiles and we do not share data with data brokers.
Children's privacy
Skald: Odyssey is intended for a general/adult audience (18+). A parent or caregiver may use it for shared reading, but the adult is the intended operator. It is not directed to children under 13, and it is not enrolled in Google Play's "Designed for Families" program.
We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Because Skald: Odyssey requires no account and collects no personal identity information from anyone, we do not build profiles of children. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will address it.
Data security and encryption
- Analytics and crash data are sent over encrypted HTTPS connections to Amplitude and Sentry. The app does not permit cleartext (unencrypted) network traffic.
- On-device reading progress and preferences are stored in the app's private storage and are not sent to MannaMila. Platform-level encrypted backup or device-transfer features may preserve them as described above.
- The app requests no location, camera, microphone, contacts, photos, storage, tracking, or advertising-ID access. Android grants only INTERNET as an external capability; Android tooling also adds a self-scoped signature permission used only to keep dynamic receivers non-exported. The iOS app declares no location, camera, microphone, contacts, photos, or tracking entitlement or usage description.
Data retention
We operate no account or reading-progress backend. Amplitude and Sentry store the processor data described above on our behalf.
- On-device data (progress and preferences) persists on your device until you clear the app's data or uninstall the app.
- Amplitude analytics data is retained for up to 24 months from collection, or until you request deletion using your Analytics ID, whichever comes first.
- Sentry crash and diagnostic data is automatically deleted by the provider within 90 days of collection.
Your choices
- On-device data: on Android, clear the app's storage in Settings or uninstall it. On iPhone or iPad, uninstall Skald: Odyssey. A later platform backup restore may restore a backed-up copy unless you also remove that backup through the platform's backup controls.
- Analytics and diagnostics: these are required parts of the published app and there is no in-app opt-out. The About & Privacy screen shows a copyable Analytics ID. Email that ID to privacy@mannamila.com to request deletion of the associated Amplitude analytics and Sentry diagnostic records. We cannot locate the data by your name because Skald: Odyssey does not send your name.
International users and where data is processed
Skald: Odyssey is offered in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Our analytics/crash processors may store and process data on servers located in the United States or other countries. By using the app, you understand that data described here may be processed in the United States. We do not collect the name or account information needed to identify you directly; use the Analytics ID for processor-data requests.
Changes to this policy
If we change our data practices, we will update this document and revise the "Last updated" date above. Material changes will be reflected in the app listing and at the hosted policy URL.
