Skald: Odyssey — Privacy Policy
This policy applies to Skald: Odyssey 0.7.0 and later versions. Your version is shown at the bottom of About & Privacy. See “Earlier versions” for the practices of prior releases.
Who we are
Skald: Odyssey is a reader for Homer's Odyssey, published by MannaMila LLC. Contact privacy@mannamila.com about privacy or data requests, or support@mannamila.com for product support.
At a glance
- Reading text, your saved place, selected book and translation, and reading preferences are kept in app storage. MannaMila has no Skald account or reading-history server. Platform backup and device transfer are described below.
- Skald uses Meta's SDK on Android to measure MannaMila's advertising. On iPhone and iPad, direct Meta measurement starts only if you allow Apple's tracking permission after actively completing a free book. Where the device's region setting or time zone, or on Android its mobile network or SIM, puts it in the European Union, Skald itself sends nothing to Meta on either platform and never asks. Skald displays no ads in the reader.
- Outside the European Union, the app can check MannaMila's content service for reviewed library updates no more than once an hour. That request carries no reading data. In the European Union it makes no such request and reads the library already on the device.
- Reading reminders are scheduled locally. You control them through your device's notification settings.
- Apple or Google handles purchases. Skald receives ownership information, not your payment-card or bank details.
Reading data and reminders
Your reading progress, preferences and note-interaction history are stored in the app's private storage. They let Skald return to your place and adapt which notes it shows. MannaMila has no server that receives or synchronizes this history. Skald does not run Amplitude or Sentry and has no app-configured crash-diagnostics destination.
Skald can remind you to continue reading after three days away, after a week, then at intervals of two weeks. These notifications are scheduled by the app on your device, without a push service, after true foreground reading sessions. Their quoted reading excerpts stay in app storage. Tapping a reminder resumes the saved passage. You can turn reminders off in your device's notification settings.
On Android, Google backup or device transfer may preserve the file that records local full access, depending on your device and backup settings. Reading progress, preferences, legacy Analytics IDs, content, and advertising-measurement bookkeeping are excluded. Clearing app data or uninstalling removes the active local copy; a platform restore may restore the entitlement.
On iPhone and iPad, Apple backup and device transfer may preserve app-container data according to your Apple settings. Uninstalling removes the active local copy; a later Apple restore may restore that data. Purchase ownership can also be recovered from the same store and store account.
Advertising measurement
MannaMila advertises Skald and asks Meta's SDK to measure those ads. The SDK
sends an install event for attribution. On Android, Skald turns the SDK's
automatic event logging off, so it sends no app-open, app-close or
session-length events; the iPhone and iPad section below says what that platform
sends. After each successful load of a free
Odyssey book, Skald can ask the SDK to log a ViewedContent event that can repeat
and does not identify the book. Skald also asks the SDK to log checkout for an
unlock and a confirmed purchase after a matching locally initiated checkout has
produced durable full access.
Checkout and purchase events include the fixed product identifier
odyssey_full_unlock or odyssey_full_unlock_edu, the price actually displayed
by the store, and its ISO currency. The product identifier therefore discloses
whether the standard or educational option was selected.
A pending state is not logged as a purchase. If a locally initiated pending checkout later succeeds, including after restart or an ownership sweep, Skald can ask the SDK to log one purchase after the matching verified entitlement is durable. Cancellation, failure, ordinary restore, unmatched startup ownership, and redelivery after the local claim do not log a purchase. The app keeps only the fixed product identifier, offered price, currency and checkout time in local purchase-measurement bookkeeping, and consumes a matching eligibility record once.
Skald does not send Meta a book identifier, translation, reading position, story passage, note history, store-account identifier, order ID, transaction ID, purchase token or payment method. A free-book event says only that free Odyssey content loaded successfully.
A call from Skald to Meta's SDK does not prove that Meta received, retained or attributed the event. Platform and Meta controls can delay, restrict or drop delivery.
Android
Android includes Meta's facebook-core SDK. It asks the SDK to log the events described above. The SDK can use its installation identifier, Google's advertising ID where available, and the Google Play install referrer. The referrer describes the campaign or link that led to the download.
The Android package includes the Play install-referrer permission, Google's AD_ID permission, and Android Privacy Sandbox permissions for Attribution, Ad ID, Custom Audience and Topics. Skald does not use the Topics or Protected Audience APIs. These packaged permissions remain present even in a build in which Meta initialization is disabled.
iPhone and iPad
Skald asks for Apple's tracking permission only after you actively finish a free book: you started before its final paragraph, scrolled in the reader, and first reached the true end in that current session. It does not ask on first launch, from historical or restored progress already at the end, when you only open or reposition the source or a translation, after a paid book, or without reader interaction.
If you allow tracking, Skald may share future app opens, successful free-book openings, checkout, and confirmed-purchase events with Meta to measure MannaMila's ads. It does not share events from before you allow tracking. Meta's SDK uses an installation identifier for this measurement; advertiser-ID collection is off, and Skald does not send IDFA. Checkout and purchase events include the selected standard or educational product identifier, the price displayed by the App Store, and its ISO currency. They do not include a receipt, transaction ID, purchase token, payment method, reading text, translation, saved place, or book identifier.
If you decline or cannot authorize tracking, Skald does not send direct measurement events to Meta. Reading, purchasing, and restoring purchases work the same. You can change this permission later in iOS Settings. If you later turn off tracking permission, Skald stops sending new direct measurement events. A request already started while permission was present may already be in transit.
Outside the European Union, when tracking is not allowed (before Skald asks, or if
you decline) or direct measurement is otherwise off, Skald uses Apple's SKAdNetwork.
This system lets an ad network learn whether its ad led to an install or purchase
without identifying you. Skald sets its SKAdNetwork conversion value to 0 when the
app launches. After a verified standard or educational unlock that follows a
checkout you started in Skald, it asks Apple to update the conversion value to 1
for one purchase. The value does not identify which unlock you bought or include a
price, currency, receipt, transaction ID, reading activity, or device identifier.
For an install Apple attributes to an ad, Apple decides whether to send the ad
network an anonymous ad-attribution postback and how much conversion detail it
includes. Skald does not receive that postback. This Apple path sends no direct
purchase event to Meta; the postback, if Apple sends one, may let Meta measure a
purchase from its ad. Restores, redelivery, and refunds neither create a new
purchase value nor withdraw one already recorded.
Where your device's region setting or time zone is in the European Union, Skald never asks for the tracking permission, shares no events with Meta, and submits no SKAdNetwork conversion value. Apple may still send its own anonymous ad-attribution postback for an install it attributes to an ad; Skald cannot stop that. Skald itself sends Meta nothing.
Controls, retention and deletion
On Android, About & Privacy carries an allow-or-turn-off control for advertising measurement, on every device and in every region outside the European Union. Skald treats a device as in the European Union when its current mobile network's country, its SIM's country, its region setting or its time zone says so; it decides that on the device each time it opens, and none of them is stored or sent. On such a device measurement is off, there is nothing to allow, and About & Privacy says so. Where your connection appears to be in the United States, Canada, Australia or New Zealand, and neither your device's current mobile network nor its SIM points to a country outside them, measurement starts before you choose, so the install event, and any free-book, checkout or purchase events logged in the meantime, may already have reached Meta by the time you turn it off. Otherwise, outside the European Union, it stays off until you allow it. If your device isn't on a mobile network and has no SIM, the connection alone decides whether it starts. Turning it off stops new measurement at once, and anything not yet sent is deleted at the next launch without being sent; a request already under way or already scheduled can still finish. Android's system advertising controls can reset or delete the advertising ID where available. On iPhone and iPad, Apple's tracking permission controls future direct Meta measurement. Denial does not limit the reader or its purchase features.
Meta controls retention and deletion of direct measurement data it receives under its own privacy policy. MannaMila cannot directly locate or delete records tied only to Meta's SDK installation identifier, and Skald's old Analytics ID cannot identify those records. You can use your platform's advertising or tracking controls to stop future collection. See Meta's privacy policy for Meta's data controls, or email privacy@mannamila.com for help routing a privacy or deletion request. We cannot promise that Meta can identify a record from the information available to Skald.
Purchases
Books I, II and IX are free. The standard and educational one-time unlocks both grant access to the remaining books. The educational option is chosen by self-attestation; Skald does not request student documents or proof of employment.
Apple or Google processes payment and supplies a verified purchase or ownership result to the app. Skald saves a local entitlement before acknowledging or finishing a transaction. It has no purchase backend and does not receive your card, bank account or payment method. The limited checkout and purchase events described above use the selected product identifier and actual store price and currency; they do not contain a receipt, transaction ID or purchase token.
Restore purchase uses the same store and store account. Apple and Google process their store services under their own privacy notices.
Content updates
At most once an hour when you open Skald outside the European Union, it can contact https://delivery.mannamila.com, a MannaMila service hosted on Cloudflare, for reviewed library updates. There is no separate in-app switch. Requests and downloads use HTTPS. A failed request leaves the existing library available.
Skald treats a device as in the European Union when its region setting or time zone says so, or on Android when its current mobile network's country or its SIM's country does; it decides that on the device each time it opens, without storing or sending any of them. Such a device does not contact the content service at all and reads the library that shipped with the app or was installed earlier.
The request carries no reading history, saved place, story passage, selected book or translation, legacy Analytics ID, advertising ID or purchase record. Routine network information such as the request IP address is processed to serve and protect the request. Downloaded content is checked before it can replace the active library.
Earlier versions
Versions before 0.5.0 could send pseudonymous usage analytics to Amplitude and crash diagnostics to Sentry. Version 0.5.0 retired those services and stopped creating the app's Analytics ID. An upgraded installation may still retain its old ID. About & Privacy displays it and can prepare a deletion-request email; Skald does not transmit it automatically or create a replacement.
Historical records remain subject to the providers' terms unless deleted sooner. Email the legacy Analytics ID to privacy@mannamila.com to request deletion. If no ID remains, you may still contact us, but we may be unable to locate pseudonymous records.
Android versions 0.5.0–0.6.1 used Meta for install and app-open attribution without the custom conversion events added in 0.7.0. iOS versions 0.5.0–0.6.1 declared SKAdNetwork identifiers but linked no Meta SDK and sent Meta no app events. Versions before 0.5.0 included neither Meta SDK nor the content-update service.
Separate website, forms and messages
If you contact us, we receive your message, address and any information you choose to include. Our public website and forms are separate from the app. They may process routine web-request information and website analytics; the feedback notice and product-updates notice describe their respective forms. Opening a museum or other external link uses that site's services and privacy terms.
Your choices and security
Reset reading progress starts your reading again without removing books you have unlocked. Clearing app storage or uninstalling removes local app data, subject to platform backup and device-transfer settings described above. You can turn local reading reminders off in your device's notification settings. On iPhone and iPad, you can manage Skald's tracking permission in iOS Settings.
Network requests described here use encrypted HTTPS. The app does not ask for your contacts, location, camera, microphone, photos or general file storage. Android permits no cleartext network traffic. No security measure is absolute; contact privacy@mannamila.com about a suspected privacy or security problem.
Skald is intended for an adult or parent-led audience, with the adult as operator. It is not directed to children under 13 or enrolled in Google Play's Designed for Families program.
Skald: Odyssey is offered on Google Play and the App Store in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the 27 member states of the European Union.
If you are in the European Union
On a device that Skald treats as in the European Union, Skald itself sends nothing to Meta and contacts no MannaMila server. Skald treats a device as in the European Union when one of these signs says so: its region setting or its time zone, or on Android its current mobile network's country or its SIM's country.
MannaMila LLC, a company in the United States, is responsible for the personal data it receives or decides the use of. European Union law calls that the “controller”. MannaMila has no office in the European Union and has not appointed a representative there. Write to privacy@mannamila.com with any privacy question or request.
What MannaMila can still receive
- Messages you send us: your email address and what you write. We use them to answer you and to keep a record of what was asked and done. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in answering the people who write to us; when you use a right listed below, the law requires us to act. We keep a message until your question or request is settled and for as long afterwards as we need a record of it, then delete it. Google hosts our mailbox.
- Sales records, if you buy the unlock. Apple or Google sells you the unlock and reports its sales to MannaMila, as in every country. Apple reports totals. Google Play reports each order: its number, time, product, price and tax, device model and country, sometimes the state, city and postal code. Its reports do not have your name, email address or payment details, but we can find an order by its number or by your email address. We keep our copies for as long as United States tax rules have us keep accounting records. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in keeping proper accounts.
- Store reviews. A review you post on the App Store or Google Play is public, and we can reply to it. Google Play also shows us the device model, Android version and language it came from.
- The website, its forms and its analytics. They are separate from the app; see “Separate website, forms and messages”.
What you can ask for, and how
You can ask us for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, to correct or delete it, or to restrict it (we keep it but stop using it). Where we use it with your consent, you can ask for it in a form you can take elsewhere.
Where the legal basis is our legitimate interest, you can object at any time.
Write to privacy@mannamila.com from the address you used before and say what you are asking for. For a Google Play purchase, add the order number from your receipt. We answer within one month.
You can also complain to the data-protection authority where you live or work, or where you think the law was broken. The European Data Protection Board lists the authorities at https://www.edpb.europa.eu/about-edpb/about-edpb/members_en.
If your device shows none of these signs
This part is only for a device that is in the European Union although none of the signs above says so. A time zone set to a place in the European Union rules it out. Skald treats such a device as outside the European Union:
- Content service. Skald can check for library updates. On Android, until you allow measurement or turn it off, Skald also asks the same service each time it opens whether measurement may start where your connection appears to be. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in an up-to-date library and in knowing where to ask first.
- Measurement you allow. On Android, where Skald asks, measurement starts only if you choose Allow. On iPhone and iPad, direct Meta measurement starts only if you allow Apple's tracking permission. The legal basis is your consent, and you can withdraw it in About & Privacy or in iOS Settings.
- Measurement Skald does not ask about. On Android, where your connection appears to be in the United States, Canada, Australia or New Zealand, measurement can start before you choose, as “Controls, retention and deletion” describes; you can turn it off in About & Privacy. On iPhone and iPad, without the permission, Skald gives Apple's SKAdNetwork a conversion value of 0 or 1 that carries no identifier, as “iPhone and iPad” describes.
Turning measurement off does not undo what was already sent. To leave this case, set your device's time zone or region to where you are, then close Skald completely and open it again. Skald then treats the device as in the European Union, and on Android deletes anything Meta's SDK had not yet sent.
Meta's part. Meta's terms set out its roles where European Union law applies. Meta Platforms Ireland Limited measures MannaMila's ads on MannaMila's instructions (as its “processor”). MannaMila and Meta Ireland decide together on collecting the data through Meta's SDK and sending it to Meta Ireland (as “joint controllers”). Meta Ireland then uses the data for its own purposes (as an “independent controller”), including to target, deliver and personalize ads and content. It may keep the data for up to two years. Meta Ireland, not MannaMila, answers requests about the data it stores. Its contact details, its legal basis, its transfers to the United States and your rights against it are in Meta's privacy policy, Business Tools Terms, Controller Addendum and data transfer addendum.
